How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important role as your furnace prepares to warm your house.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t working correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will tell you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
